A common worry for those who care about the well-being of young people are the choice(s) they will make about whether or not to use or misuse drugs and alcohol. Peer pressure is strong, as are the influences of social media, the stresses of school, home, family and life in general. It’s important for caring adults – faith community members, parents and others to understand the impact drugs and alcohol have on adolescents and their families.

  • Learn about the extent of the substance misuse problem in Minnesota.

  • Describe the risk factors for substance misuse in adolescents and its impact on the developing brain.

  • Become familiar with the continuum of substance use.

  • Take away tips in addressing concerns when substance use or misuse is suspected.

  • Know how to set boundaries and create expectations for adolescent decision-making and behavior.
